Threes Anna is a writer and director from the Netherlands who works in three fields; literature, film and theatre.
In September 2007 her debut film 'The Bird Can’t Fly' premièred on the San Sebastian International Film Festival.
The film won the price for the 'Best First Director's Film' at the Dutch Film Festival, the 'Stimulus for Succes Prize' and the 'Special Jury Prize' on the International Film Festival Sofia.
In February 2008 her fourth novel 'Vogel kan niet vliegen' ('The bird can't fly') was released. Currently she is working on the film adaptation of her novel The Silent City.
After the Rietveld Academy of Arts in Amsterdam (1985), where she studied theatre design and audio-visual studies, Threes Anna became a core member of the international theatre company Dogtroep.
Following a period of transition Threes became the company Artistic Director (1990-1998). In this capacity she wrote and directed over 50 site-specific theatrical spectacles all across the globe. Performances were staged on the remains of the Berlin Wall, during the war in Belgrade and just after the first elections in South Africa, as well as in the snow at the Winter Olympics in France, in the slums of Uzbekistan, and in the Royal Theatre Carré in Amsterdam. Her fascination with extreme situations and locations was roused during this period.
From one of the shows, Noordwesterwals, a spectacular performance in which 1.2 million liters of water formed the lead, she made a short film. During the nineties Threes Anna also made several documentaries on visual artists and their work.
In 1998 she began to develope her first film script 'The Bird Can't Fly', which was inspired on research in South Africa. In 2006, after nine years of fighting for the project, her debut feature film 'The Bird Can't Fly', with Barbara Hershey in the lead, was shot in South Africa. The film is an international co-production between South Africa, the Netherlands and Ireland. Threes wrote, co-produced and directed the film.
In June 2003 her first novel, 'De kus van de weduwe' (The Kiss of a Widow), was published; in 2005 her novel 'Motormoeder', which was the first Dutch novel downloadable on mobile phone. Both books were published by Vassallucci in Amsterdam.
In 2006 publishing house Querido published her novel 'De stille stad' (The Silent City) and in 2008 the novel 'Vogel kan niet vliegen' (The Bird Can't Fly).
Threes Anna also wrote a series of columns for a Dutch newspaper, as well as some short stories.
Beside her own work Threes Anna gives lectures and workshops all around the world about directing and site-specific theatre.
Threes Anna is schrijver en regisseur. Zij werkt op het gebied van literatuur, film en theater.
In 2007 ging de door haar geschreven, geregisseerde en co-geproduceerde speelfilm 'The Bird Can’t Fly' in wereld première op het internationaal film festival van San Sebastian. De film won diverse prijzen. De erop gebaseerde roman 'Vogel kan niet vliegen' verscheen in 2008. Momenteel werkt zij aan de filmbewerking van haar roman De stille stad'.
Na de Rietveld Academie, waar ze theaterontwerp en audioviseel studeerde, trad Threes toe tot de kern van de internationale theatergroep Dogtroep.
Na een overgangsperiode werd zij artistiek leider van Dogtroep (1990-1998). In die periode schreef en regisseerde zij meer dan vijftig locatietheatervoorstellingen over de hele wereld – op de restanten van de Berlijnse muur, vlak na de eerste verkiezingen in Zuid-Afrika, in de sneeuw tijdens de Olympische Winterspelen in Frankrijk, in de sloppenwijken van Oezbekistan en in het Koninklijk Carré te Amsterdam, altijd weer werden extreme situaties en locaties opgezocht. Van een van de voorstellingen, Noordwesterwals, een spektakel waarin 1,2 miljoen liter water de hoofdrol speelde, maakte zij een korte film.
In de jaren negentig maakte zij ook verscheidene documentaires over beeldend kunstenaars en hun werk.
In 1998 begon Threes haar eerste filmscript te ontwikkelen, 'The Bird Can’t Fly', geïnspireerd op onderzoek in Zuid-Afrika. Na negen jaar strijd om het project van de grond te krijgen werd in 2006 de speelfilm gedraaid, met Barbara Hershey in de hoofdrol. De film is een internationale coproductie (Zuid-Afrika, Nederland en Ierland).
In 2003 verscheen haar eerste roman, 'De kus van de weduwe', een deels autobiografische roman. Haar tweede roman 'Motormoeder'(2005) was de eerste roman in Nederland die je kon downloaden via je mobiel. Beide romans werden uitgegeven door uitgeverij Vassallucci. In 2006 verscheen bij uitgeverij Querido de roman 'De stille stad' en in 2008 'Vogel kan niet vliegen', een roman die geinspireerd is op haar filmscript 'The Bird Can't Fly'.
Threes Anna publiceerde ook een reeks columns voor de krant Tubantia en enkele korte verhalen in verzamelbundels.
Naast haar eigen artistiek werk geeft ze lezingen en workshops over de hele wereld over.
