40 years of visual stories a living exhibition. A retrospective of all my work. Three days full house. It was a very special event because you rarely get the chance to see the lines in your own work so well. But when all my work came together, it turned out that the big similarity was that I always show emotions with images (and not words). Whether I tell stories through a film, a novel, a podcast or theatre.
At the cinema, all my films were playing and the auditorium was always full. There were also reference books on display with my scripts, reports of research trips, storyboards and other info about my films.
In the library, besides the reference books, there were also all my novels. Some people sat here reading for hours. Others bought the books and took them home.
In a special room: cinema Dogtroep, a 2-hour compilation was shown of my theatre work with Dogtroep in the 1990s. There was a lot of laughing and crying here. Because only when you look back in time do you realise that everything has changed. And that our paradise is never coming back.
In the podcast room, people sat on beanbags and listened for hours to my latest stories. These too are visual stories, though here no fantasy is used but only the contemporary world. This is how I show what I feel.
In the middle of the room was a giant diorama full of memories. Where people could look into my soul: 50 little worlds, showing 40 years of adventures. Because my life is the opposite of boring.
And even the dining room had my handwriting. Because all the tablecloths (collected throughout my life) I had painted. Meals inspired by my films were cooked especially for this occasion.
