In 1999 and 2000 I did research in Bombay and Calcutta. This trip was one of the most amazing research I ever did. My full report in PDF,m in English or in Dutch.
With the help of Nameeta Premkumar (line production) and Paolo Rapalino (camera) I did 85 interviews with a cross-section of the inhabitants of Bombay and Calcutta. I talked with people in tower blocks, in palaces, in the slums and even with people who didn’t had a house at all. I talked to rich and poor, young and old. Men and women. Muslim, Hindu, Christian, Buddhist and Sikh.
I made this trip as inspiration for my film script ‘War for a Kiss’, a satirical musical, in which poverty, wealth, pollution and overpopulation were shown in a kitschy, stylised and humorous manner.
For many years I put a lot of effort in this project but this fairy-tale about a city in the land of the Kamasutra where kissing in public was forbidden. But today a kiss on the silver screen is possible and therefor the script is outdated and won’t be realised.
A selection out of my weblog about making ‘War for a Kiss’.
